Full house

It's been a crazy few weeks here. We've moved and taken on more animals than anticipated. Haymitch and Elvis are still with us and in need of a home. We've adopted their sister Honey as a member of our family. We also added another cat, Mamba, a little spitfire female. Today I brought home Quinn, Honey's brother and fellow protective custody dog. There will be more entries to come, I hope.

Introducing these new animals, I'm seeing how soft our boys are.

They're great with Honey because she's a mommy, first and foremost. She's gentle and respectful with them, most of the time. They don't know how to handle Mamba, though, who is a scrappy girl from the streets who defends her bedroom like it's her little queendom. The boys just can't defend themselves properly; Haymitch is too fat and happy to be bothered to fight and Elvis is a gentle, loving boy. Neither know what to do with her when she gets slappy. And Honey has ruined them for dogs; they run up to new dogs like they have a new best friend, oblivious to the fact that they could get gobbled up. Lucky for them, Quinn is interested but not aggressive or too obnoxious.

I love these boys, but they need to get out of my house. Won't you take them?

I'd love to see them go to the same home because they get along so well, but they would both do just fine in homes with other cats.

Haymitch is going to be on WRAL next week! I'm not sure when it will air, but we are going on Tuesday. Hopefully I won't mess it up and Haymitch will look as awesome as he is.

Haymitch and new friends

Haymitch had a good time at the Pagan Pride Festival but didn't find his family.

He went out for a couple walks, but it wasn't a very cat-safe environment.

He's very playful and was interested in the other cats, but they didn't really want to play with him. One cat even had to go into cool-down because he poked her one too many times. He really needs a companion who loves his company.

Last night he went with us to our friend's house and met her cat for the first time. He's not exactly friendly and wasn't too keen on making friends, but that didn't stop Haymitch from trying. Haymitch hung around with him and cried to try and get the other cat to play, but it didn't work. They followed each other around, and that's about the extent of their new friendship.

When we got home, he spent a long time playing with his best friend, the dog.

He also went to a picnic yesterday where he got to spend some time out of his crate.

He climbed that tree up to about 4 feet. He had a pretty good time exploring the area. He had to go back in his carrier because he kept trying to get on the tables and people were eating. But he had a pretty good time.

The harness he uses is one that I bought for my rabbit a few years ago. It's actually just an extra small dog harness. It is fitted to him so that he can't squirm out of it. That is very important. If the harness does not fit right, it is not safe because cats are very good at wiggling out of things and could run off and get hurt. Luckily he does very well on the leash and has very few problems with it. Hopefully his new family will take advantage of that. He also travels in his carrier fairly well and will eventually settle down and go to sleep if left alone.

He may not seem very personable at first and is definitely not a "lap cat", but he does enjoy the company of people and other animals. In our house, he prefers the dog, my husband, then me, in that order. He always wants to be close to his family and will follow you around. If you're willing to play with him, he almost always wants to play. My mom described him like a dog who just wants to be near you but doesn't necessarily need constant attention. I'm sure he will find his perfect home soon.

Come meet Haymitch!

Haymitch will be at the Pagan Pride Festival this Sunday from noon-3. He did very well at the last adoption event and was very brave in his harness. He walked very well on his leash and enjoyed exploring. He was also very happy to just sit and watch all the people and animals go by from the safety of his kennel.

I'm sure this Sunday will be fun, so come out and see him!

Adoption Event Sunday!

Haymitch and I will be going to the adoption event at PetSmart this Sunday, September 15. The event is actually both Saturday and Sunday from 10-4 each day, but we can't make it to Saturday. Not sure what time we'll be there, but if you send me an email, I can try to make sure we meet!

There will be adoptable animals both from our wonderful foster homes and straight off the shelter's adoption floor. The goal is 100 adoptions, and I hope Haymitch is one of those!

Play hard, rest hard

Haymitch is hard to photograph because he's so active, but isn't he handsome?

He likes it here better than the shelter, but he'd sure love a real home where he has a friend who loves to play as much as he does.

Meet Haymitch

Haymitch is a fun 4-month-old kitten with a soft, medium-length coat and a hilarious personality. His gray "cape" has given him the nickname of "The Batman".

He's a total clown and loves playing with his dog sister.

Haymitch would do best in a home with another animal that likes to play. He gets along with both cats and dogs but can be a little annoying if the other pet doesn't want to play as much. He does a pretty good job at keeping himself occupied, though, so he doesn't need constant play attention.

He's a purr box and loves attention. He will lick you or his animal friend, then play attack. He is usually gentle with play but would probably do best in a home without small children.
