Jazz

We have a new short-term foster, Jazz. So short-term, in fact, that he might be going back to the shelter tomorrow. He's such an awesome guy, and now that he's well, we think he'll get adopted very quickly.

He's gotten along just fine with the dogs and wasn't bothered by Madeline, even though she was very rude. He actually ran away, poor guy.

When he was first let out of his room, he explored everything very thoroughly. He definitely loves to be up high. He does have this weird thing with plastic bags that his new owner will need to watch out for, but that was about it. He's a great guy.

The scoop on poop

Scooping the litterbox may not be the most fun part of caring for a cat, but it's one of the most important. Paying attention to what's going on in the box keeps you up to date on your cat's digestive health and something out of the ordinary can be the first sign of a problem.

Many cats are extremely regular, down to the number and even location in the box. For those cats especially, a change can be a big deal.

For example, Madeline didn't go as much yesterday and is typical, which is weird. Today she had diarrhea, which was probably caused by her getting a big chunk of wet food, when she usually has none. Now I know not to do that. Luckily, she is bright-eyed and bushy-tailed, so I think she'll be fine.

Our other cat, Jazz, who is sick, just got here last night and has only peed once. Hopefully he'll loosen up, eat more and start to have normal litterbox habits. He's a great guy and I'll have pics/vids of him soon.

Cat litter

I've been using Fresh Step, purchased from BJ's, for about a year. It's a pretty good value and works better than any others I've tried. It's a bit dusty and the smell is a bit strong, but it clumps fantastically and only needs to be completely changed about once a month.

I'm always up for trying different products, though, so when someone donated a box of Arm & Hammer Double Duty, I figure I'd give it a shot. It was time for Madeline's to be deep cleaned, so I refilled it with the A&H, since mixing usually just messes stuff up.

24 hours later, and I will not be using this stuff again. Her room smells very odd, and the litter doesn't mask the smell of poop nearly as well as the Fresh Step. It also doesn't clump as well, which is annoying because she pees a little more than the other cats we've had. I'll use up this box and go buy more Fresh Step. Blargh.

Play with me!

Kittie selfies

Madeline is such a good girl. She's finally venturing into the living room and just loves being near her people. Also, Ruffles (the hamster) is fascinating.
