This is Roxy:
She came in to WCAC in September 2011. She had been shaved, had at least one puppy, and abandoned. Because of a heart murmur, she was labeled Rescue Only. A rescue pulled her and my mom took her to the vet to get a full heart panel. The tests showed the murmur was low-grade and safe for surgery, so Roxy made the trip back from Charlotte to be spayed at WCAC.
My grandmother had lost her dog to old age a few months before we got Roxy, so we thought that she would be a good companion. It was love at first sight, even though poor Roxy still had no hair. A few months later, though, and she would enjoy having her hair combed for hours and doing what she did best, which was lay in my grandmother's lap.
In July of this year, Roxy went to the vet for emergency surgery to remove five kidney stones. If another day had gone by, she almost surely would have died:
The two largest ones were over half an inch wide, and were likely forming for years. She spent 2 days in the hospital and her care cost over $1200. When told at the beginning how much it might cost, Granny said, "It doesn't matter. Just save her." She'd been so afraid Roxy was going to die the night before she went to the hospital, she sat up and held her all night, looking into those big, brown eyes.
She's fully recovered from her surgery now and is feeling better than ever. She previously suffered from incontinence and it seems that removing the kidney stones has fixed that. She also has a little more energy and appetite now, though she is still a lazy girl and very picky about her food.
She's a great guard dog and best friend for my grandmother, and we're so proud to tell people that she came from the local shelter.
