When Zeta left us in February, we held off on taking another dog in anticipation of kitten season. When it didn't come, I fell in love with Chester and brought him home.
Kitten season puts more stress on shelter workers who foster just because we see all the ones in need and know the sad outcome if they don't find foster homes or rescues. I held off as long as I could until Ramona was scheduled to be put down in the morning. She's feral and can't go to a regular foster home, and no rescue could take her. I've been asking to try a feral mom with kittens, with the plan of spaying and releasing mom after the kittens are weaned. It's so sad to have an entire foster put to sleep because no one can take them.
Mom has gotten used to me, and while I don't think she'll ever let me touch her, we have a pretty good feral-caretaker relationship. I am totally in love with the kittens, and little Satsuma perks up at my voice when I greet Ramona. The kittens are mobile this morning, while even last night they were content to roll around in their box.
