Outtakes!

Here are a few of my favorite photos from our photo shoot with Shannon. You can see the first set from March 2014 on her Landfill Dogs page.

Gone to rescue

Said goodbye to my boys today. They went to Feline Canine Fellowship Coalition. I miss them terribly, but hopefully they'll each get the awesome home that they deserve. Fingers crossed that it's soon.

Zeta, almost one year later.

We had a follow-up photo shoot with Mary Shannon Johnstone for her ongoing Landfill Dogs project.
We were all very happy with how the day went, even if it got strangely and suddenly cold and windy. Zeta did great and was on her best behavior. She walked right with us, was very confident in her walk and was glad to show off some of her new tricks. She did not bark at the strangers she saw, though they were all at a distance. She played a little fetch and ate some grass.

...she's getting better at catching.
March 2014, we'd taken a scared, scraggly dog to have her photo taken. Physically she was just starting to heal and we had no idea how damaged she was psychologically. Mary Shannon was very understanding, but Zeta's behavior was inappropriate and she probably just wasn't ready.

This is one of her old photos. If you look closely, you can see that she'd had puppies recently. Her fur is pocked and dark. Her ears are ragged. There are sores on her leg. We fixed all those things, and today she is happy and healthy.

All she needs now is a family. She deserves it.

What's so great about Zeta?

Lots!
  • Is healthy and happy.
  • Rides great in a car.
  • Is house-trained and crate-trained and can be left out all day with no accidents (though stuffed cat toys will be disemboweled if made accessible).
  • Gets along just fine with adult cats unsupervised all day, even if she probably annoys them.
  • Travels well (can be trusted in new places).
  • Does fine crated with her foster sister, even though she doesn't need to be crated.
  • Is quiet, but lets you know when strangers are at the door.
  • Is not picky about food.
  • Learns the daily routine and will remind you that it's potty time, dinner time, etc.
  • Is content to run around the yard and inside (long walks not required!).
  • Likes to fetch and be praised for bringing the ball back, indoors and outdoors!
  • Loves to cuddle and get attention.  Perfect TV-watching companion!
  • Settles well at night (great snuggler).
  • Loves to follow commands and be rewarded: could potentially learn doggy agility courses.

Young at heart

It's so easy to forget The Baron's age. He is so much fun and so entertaining. He also has the funniest fur, it's fuzzy, like kitten fur. I've never seen an adult with that fur. He's such a great guy.

Persimmon

This is Persimmon Periwinkles (111330). He is 6 years old, not yet neutered. He has been at the shelter since early November because the adoption floor scares him. Once he's out, he's a sweet snuggler who purrs and makes biscuits. We're looking for a foster home (or adopter!) for him so that he can feel normal and safe.

Please come help this adorable guy out!

Cats, cats, cats

For the first time ever, we have three adult cats in the house. I'm learning a lot about their personalities and how they interact with other animals. Their behaviors have changed as they settle in with each other.

Madeline:
  • People- Very, very affectionate with her people, shy but comes around to strangers pretty quickly. Will let me pick her up and carry her around, but jumps if my husband picks her up.
  • Dogs- Wary of new dogs but can live peacefully with cat friendly dogs, though she is not above smacking a dog in the face while it's sleeping (but no claws). Kind of plays with Zeta, in a weird way.
  • Cats- She will tolerate other cats and even play in her own way, but hasn't shown any inclination to becomes "besties" with anyone. It takes her a few days to warm up and relax, and she can still be a bit stand-offish.
  • She seems to prefer human companionship over other animals. She loves to play with people.
The Baron:
  • People- Very affectionate with people. Careful around strangers, but friendly. Tolerates being picked up and seems to like being held if he feels safe.
  • Dogs- Allows light sniffing and play, but is generally indifferent. Will defend himself if he feels threatened.
  • Cats- Will play in his own way. Likes to chase (that's probably the most exercise he gets). Keeps tabs on the other cats. Does not seem inclined to make friends.
Nikolai:
  • People- Very affectionate but very skittish. Loves attention but doesn't like being picked up. Will crawl into a lap.
  • Dogs- Does not like sudden movements. Will avoid when possible. Can tolerate sleeping and motionless dogs.
  • Cats- Very interested. Reacts well to correction and rudeness. I really hope we can find him a feline friend, because he really seems to want to make friends, and the other two are not having it.
